Today i had a really interesting conversation with a member of staff who asked what my intentions were in terms of photographs and how I portray prostitution. I explained that I was not interested in presenting prostitution as either a negative or a positive thing, and that i felt, there was no way that i had the right to make any assumptions. I did however express that I felt there was never anything positive about a woman getting to such a low point in her life where she feels the need to resort to such activity. I went on to explain that in terms of the photographs (which would mainly be used for the website anyway) would be quite simply revealing the general day to day of the place and documenting what happens, in the most sensitive way possible. I expressed my opinion that to me MASH was making the very best out of what could potentially in many cases be a terrible situation.
Unlike other organisations, MASH doesn't serve to attempt to change the service users, and or make them stop, instead it provides everything they need to ensure the best made from the worst, and keeps them safe in the process.
